Me and Mine: A Family Portrait - July

Oh July, you beauty! It finally feels like we’ve had something resembling a summer - we’ve had so many lovely chilled out days just hanging out in the garden, having water fights with the hose, eating ice lollies, having dinner outside. It’s been the stuff that summer is made of!

I was much more organised this month about getting our monthly portrait done - we took the tripod out with us on our trip to Mottisfont (which you can read about here) and set about trying to get some shots in their beautiful walled garden. As expected, Max wasn’t keen at first and just kept trying to run off, but we managed to turn it into a bit of a game where he and my husband would set the timer and then both run back to me, waving arms about madly! I love how well this worked and we have our first ever nice shot of the three of us!

My husband also took the camera for some lovely shots of Max and I walking over the bridge, trip trapping looking for trolls. I loved doing this as a child and Max seems to love it too! Bizarrely, my husband had never heard of this tradition and was somewhat baffled at first and worried that we would be traumatising our child with talk of trolls. But clearly no need to worry - check out that big grin!

It’s been this month that it’s suddenly struck me that my little boy is now very much that - a little boy! I don’t know if it’s been the fact he loves a cuddle so much, the lack of hair, or the fact that his speech has been slow, but he’s always seemed to be younger than other children his age. To the point where other children younger than him would often pat him on the head (which he hates!) and say ‘baby’! But so many times this month, I’ve caught glimpses of the little boy that he is rapidly becoming and it makes my heart both swell with pride and also break a little bit at how fast he’s growing up.

In July we’ve loved:

  • Eating ice lollies in the garden
  • Playing in the paddling pool and playing with the hose
  • Trips to the lavender fields, Legoland, and the strawberry farm
  • My new shorter haircut - such a relief to get rid of such a lot of hair!
  • Playing with other children for the first time! Max has become such a friendly guy these days and is all about making friends
  • Getting to grips with my new camera (family shot still taken with the old one as I’ve not yet worked out the timer on the new one!)

What a lovely photo of the 3 of you. It really is all about making it fun for them to get the photos you want. Alice is quite good at sitting for a photo, but Holly is a challenge and we have to make it fun and be quick!! Max is a really friendly little boy and a little cutie x #meandmine

    • Ah, thanks Laura - he was on good form when we met up! Although I think he’s got more friendly with other kids lately which is lovely. I could use any tips you have - I fear that the running back game may have worn a bit thin for next month’s photos!

Lovely post, I’ve also been loving the images you’ve linked up to #ukexplore thanks for that.

    • Ah, you’re welcome, it’s lovely to be able to join in! Thanks so much for featuring our lavender field shot!

  • Ooh this is a beautiful shot! I always forget the tripod, but it’s so worth it for the perfect shot. Love how you turned it into a game too, must try that one with my two haha 🙂 xx

    • I’m hoping the game will hold the same appeal next month too! (I’m not holding out too much hope!)

  • Lovely 🙂 We took ours during a National Trust day out too, the perfect backdrop! x #meandmine

  • Lovely family time together. It’s amazing when you look at photos and realize how old your little ones look. I have had that lately where my two just seem way too grown up. Sounds like you are having a lovely summer. #meandmineproject

    • It’s funny how you see it in photos but not in real life, isn’t it? Comes as such a shock! Hope you’re having a wonderful time over in the US and enjoying better weather than us!

  • Louise George

Max certainly looks like he is enjoying looking for trolls and that photo of you all together is gorgeous. July has been such a lovely month, hasn’t it - hopefully the nice weather will continue for August 🙂

    • Haha, not off to the best start for August, is it! Hopefully it’ll pick up! He loved the troll hunting - we tripp trapped over quite a few times just to establish that there definitely wasn’t one 🙂

  • Heels and hooves

Aaw, lovely photos. That one of the two of you on the bridge is gorgeous! Yay for summer! xx

  • Cariemay

He definitely looks all boy to me - and what gorgeous shots, you can always rely on the National Trust for nice backdrops can’t you!

    • I’m getting a bit addicted to National Trust! We seem to be doing one a week (and getting some lovely photos in the process!)

  • Hayley McLean

Ahhhh such beautiful photos!!! Sounds like some lovely family time 🙂 #Meandmine

    • Thanks Katy - I think these are both going straight into a frame! Amazing after years of horrible photos to get two lovely ones on the same day!

  • Lucy

Oh I adore those photos. The one of the three of you is so happy and smiley, and that one of you and Max is just the cutest. x
