Making the night feed less painful with the Meemoobaby Meelight

I love all the new products that have arrived on the market since Max was a baby, there are so many things that make life easier for life with a newborn. One of the things I was most excited about was the Meemoo Meelight night light, so when Cheeky Rascals sent me one to review I was really keen to test it out.

When Max was little, I found the night feeds were hands down the hardest thing about becoming a parent. They continued for us until Max was about 7 months and it was relentless and exhausting. I used to try and keep lights fairly dim, but would have to use my bedside table lamp to get things started, and then switch to my mobile phone light, but I found both of those would wake me up quite a lot. The lamp light was too bright, and the phone light was too blue, so it would take me a fair while to get back to sleep after I’d finished feeding.

The Meelight solves that problem – it’s a small, egg shaped device that emits a soft yellow glow. It’s an LED light, so won’t overheat, and it minimises the ‘blue light’ that wakes you up, helping both you and your baby to return to sleep faster. It has three light levels which can be easily adjusted, and a clip so that it attaches to your clothing, meaning you have two hands free.

It’s so simple to use. It has a little dimple in it which you press to activate it. If you want it brighter, you just press the dimple again, and to turn it off, you just hold it down until the light goes off. On the lowest setting it will stay on continuously, on the other settings it will turn itself off after 30 minutes to save the battery.

I can’t say enough how much of a game changer this little device is for night feeds. The light it emits is soft, but the best thing about it is that it really only lights up the immediate area around it, rather than radiating light around the room. Getting photos of the Meelight in action was a bit tricky, but the photo below properly illustrates the kind of light that it truly gives off at night.

I tend to keep it on the lowest level, and once I have Ben latched on, I barely notice the light, and can stay pretty sleepy still. On the brighter settings it gives enough light off so that it will guide your way to the bathroom, or if you need to do a nighttime nappy change. I found that I definitely needed more light than the Meelight could offer in the early days of breastfeeding (we had quite a lot of problems in getting the latch right), but after a few weeks I found myself reaching for the Meelight more and more rather than having to use the bedside lamp.

The battery life is fantastic. Meemoo state that you should be able to run it continuously for 48 hours before needing to recharge it, and this seems pretty accurate to me. I leave it on all night on it’s lowest setting, simply so that I can find it easily when I get woken up, and I only seem to need to charge it once a week. The light begins to flash to tell you that it needs charging and you just pop it on it’s little USB charging unit for about an hour and then it’s ready to go again.

I have just one complaint about the Meemoo Meelight and that’s the little clip that you use to attach it to your clothes. It’s a paperclip style of clip, where you have to slide your clothing in between, and I do find this quite fiddly in the middle of the night. I’d have preferred a crocodile clip personally – far more simple for clumsy fingers. But that said, I’ve started using it without a clip at all – just getting the latch sorted and then popping it back on the side.

This really is such a simple little device, but it’s worth it’s weight in gold to me. I don’t tend to have any expectation that my baby will sleep through the night – it’s normal for them to wake up and want to feed, and I expect that will probably carry on for a long time yet. So having something like this that minimises disruption to your sleep is fantastic. I really can’t recommend this enough, whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle feeding, the more sleep you get, the better!

The MeeMooBaby MeeLight costs £44.99 from Cheeky Rascals and you can find it here.

Fascinating. I’ve been looking for a non-LED reading light for my eldest daughter. As this minimises blue light, I’m thinking this could be the one for her!

Oo I saw these advertised on Facebook a while back!

Katy these photos of you and Ben are beautiful, you look amazing! I wish this had been around when my two were babies what a great idea. It was so hard to find something that I could use that gave me enough light to see without waking me up too much. What a perfect solution!

Oh I wished this had been around when I was breastfeeding! A total game changer. Also what a great battery life, the fact that the battery lasts for 48 hours is amazing. Beautiful photos of you both too x

Oh wow this really is a game changer! What an amazing idea, and so needed! I used to have to turn the lamp on or the light on which would wake Gaz and leave us both tired and grumpy! Either that or try and grope around in the dark! I so wish I’d had this!!
