You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth – Kahlil Gibran   We took a trip to Alice Holt last week to do their Gruffalo trail. Walks with Max can sometimes be a bit hit and miss, so I'd been a bit wary of taking him on my own, but he was an absolute delight. The route around took us through a little section of pine trees and it was so sweet to see him so entranced by the 'Christmas trees'. His little face as he looked up at them was a picture!

The Magic of the Little Moments

The other day it was bathtime and I ended up doing the boys baths separately. I normally do them together, which doesn't always work well for Ben as he gets splashed, so when Max wanted to finish watching his episode of Paw Patrol, I let him sit downstairs until he was ready. I ended up getting in the bath with Ben, which of course meant that Max then wanted me to get in with him, which I've not done in forever. I wrapped Ben up in his dressing gown and left him happy on the changing mat. It was lovely - one of those simple things which I just don't manage to do very often. Just watching Max splash about ...

Lost in Motherhood

I was walking past a mirror the other day and I caught a brief glimpse of my reflection and couldn't help but look back to have a proper look. These days I don't seem to get time to put on makeup, or do my hair, so I wanted to check that I didn't look too much of a state. But I looked back and did an almost comical double take - I didn't recognise the person staring back at me. She didn't look a state - hair was brushed, if not styled, she didn't have lipstick on her teeth - but it wasn't the image I have of myself in my head. She looked more tired, more drab, more frumpy, ...

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth – Kahlil Gibran   We've just got back from a short trip to Cornwall and I think this photo is one of my favourites. I love a beach, especially when it gets a bit colder - there's something about it being quieter, feeling the wind on your cheeks, and hearing the sound of the waves crashing in that makes it more beautiful for me. Max has taken a long time to warm up to the beach, but on our last two trips he's not been able to get enough of it - his goal this time was to build a trench that went all the way to the sea, ...

My Life is a Series of Unfinished Projects…

Last weekend I achieved a major milestone. It may not seem much to you, but this little bookend DIY has been looming over me for months. We've been redoing Max's room to make it more of a little boy's room and this is one of the finishing touches. I've had all the parts ready and waiting - I bought the bookends from eBay, they just needed assembling, painting, and the little dinosaur figures put onto them. As DIYs go, it's not exactly the most demanding or time consuming. But it's taken until last weekend for me to have a spare minute to get around to painting them. And that's just one of the numerous unfinished projects that I have going on ...

Me and Mine: A Family Portrait in October

Hasn't October flown by in a flash? Perhaps because it's been a really busy month which we've filled with so many autumnal activities. We love autumn and I can't get enough of being outside, especially when the weather is as nice as it's been. We've been pumpkin picking, conker hunting, making apple crumble, picking sweetcorn, and crunching through leaves. Trips out to RHS Wisley, to Painshill Park, to Chessington, to the pumpkin patch, and to Winkworth Arboretum, where we took this month's family photos. We visited Winkworth earlier in the year to see the bluebells and took our April family photos there, and I knew it would be beautiful come October, so we headed there to see the autumn colours. It ...

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth – Kahlil Gibran   RHS Wisley is one of our favourite places to visit, and at the weekend we headed there for Max to show his Daddy around all his favourite places. Max loved this giant wooden T-rex sculpture - he wanted to take a photo of it on his camera, and insisted on roaring in his face!

Harvest Time at The Lost Gardens of Heligan

The Lost Gardens of Heligan has to be one of our favourite places to visit in Cornwall. We visited last year, and we all loved it, and I was so excited to return, with Max being that bit older, and to see it at a different time of year. We visited this year at the end of September, and the gardens were still looking fabulous, with some amazing autumn displays. Located near Megavissey, the gardens had been a hugely impressive part of the Tremayne estate, producing fruit and vegetables for the household, as well as the formal gardens themselves. But they fell into disrepair after WWI when most of their gardeners were called up to fight in the war, and were ...

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth – Kahlil Gibran   Yesterday we went for a walk at Winkworth Arboretum to see the autumn colours and it didn't disappoint on that front. But Max announced he was tired about 5 metres into our walk, so it was a bit hard going in places. I always find that little things can perk him right up again, and when we discovered this wooden throne towards the end of our walk, I watched in amazement as our 'tired' little boy raced up to the top! He loved sitting up there so much that we had to drag him away as a queue was forming.

Pumpkin Picking at Pickwell Farm

Last year was our first time going to pick our own pumpkin and Max loved it so much he asked to do it again! I was amazed that he'd remembered doing it, but since I loved it too, how could I refuse? We usually head to Garson's PYO farm in Esher for things like this, but I'd heard great things about Pickwell Farm in Hampshire, so we decided to make a trip of it and head down. We arrived and it was clear that pumpkin picking has now become a big hit in this country - it was really busy! We collected our wheelbarrow from the entrance and wheeled our way out to the field. I loved the little walk out ...
