Ever since we moved to Surrey, we’ve never quite been blessed with snow. In Max’s nearly 5 years on the planet, the first time he saw snow was last February, and even then we only got a sprinkling - not enough to make a snowman (or even a snowball). But we had high hopes this year when we saw the weather forecast last week - the temporary move with my parents in Berkshire came at just the right time for the snow!
We went to bed on Thursday night, full of anticipation as to what might greet us when we woke up. And sure enough, we opened the curtains to a blanket of snow!
We had a message from Max’s school to say that they were still open (obviously the tradition of not much snow in Surrey stayed true), but as he’d been complaining of being poorly all week and the journey the previous day had taken 2 hours due to lots of accidents, we decided that it wasn’t the best idea to take him.
I have to admit, I had fully expected Max to get excited about the snow for all of 5 minutes, and then complain that he was cold. But I couldn’t have been more wrong! He could have stayed out for ages, building snowmen, throwing snowballs, being pulled along by his grandad on the sledge, and just generally pottering around in the snow.
Unfortunately we didn’t have any proper snow clothes for Ben, as they’re all in storage, but I couldn’t resist taking him out for a quick pull around on the sledge with Max. We popped him in this gorgeous snuggle suit I bought recently from Frugi (who I have worked with in the past) and he absolutely loved it. He was a bit unsure at first, but as soon as the sled starting moving he couldn’t stop smiling.
It’s moments like these that make me so proud of my boys - Max’s arms wrapped protectively around Ben, and both of them giggling together. I worried so much about how Max would cope with us splitting our attention when Ben came along, but giving him a little brother has been one of the best things we’ve ever done. And Ben is so lucky to have Max as his big brother - they might have their moments but they really do love each other to bits.
So here’s to 2019 - the year it finally snowed!
